On Monday, February 4, 2008, General William "Kip" Ward kicked-off
Black History Month when he spoke at The
Lincoln Institute Breakfast
Forum
at the University Club in Washington, D.C.
General William "Kip" Ward is currently the only
black four-star general in America. He is the new commander of Africom
(a new command) and spoke about his new responsibilities.
Last
October – after a distinguished run as Deputy Commander of
the U.S. European Command – General Ward was appointed by
President Bush to lead the newly created U.S. Africa
Command.
Until now, U.S. forces in
Africa fell under the control of three different commands.
One of the U.S. Africa Command’s primary missions is to work
with African countries to strengthen governments and their
militaries to help prevent and defend against terrorist
activities.
